Peruvian Architects Karla Lourdes Chavez, from KLC Designs (Lima) and Anthony Gamarra Luque, from Gamarra & Associates (Arequipa) with the direction of Architect Urbanist Manuel Ungaro Zevallos, joined their experience in the International Architectural Competition for the addition of the New Wing of Contemporary Art at the Lima Art Museum (MALI). The biggest challenge of this project was to develop most of the program underground, then we have to propose a Plaza that integrates the current Art Museum with the addition and finally to redesign the Exhibition Park. They got inspired by the presence of the square as a compelling shape at the MALI´s spatial organization and they set it up as a urban landmark that is a gateway to the Lima Historic Centre and connects the contemporary with the Lima traditional. This competition was a great experience for two architectural firms separated geographically by the distance, but purposeful to give the best of each one to provide an optimal and quality solution.
